The Story

Moatsu Mong Festival is celebrated during the first week of May every year by the Ao tribe.

Moatsu Mong Festival is celebrated during the first week of May every year by the Ao tribe. Various rites and rituals are performed during this period. The festival is observed after the sowing is done. The festival time provides the people a period of activity and entertainment after the stressful work of clearing fields, burning jungles and sowing seeds.

The Moatsu festival is marked by singing song and dance. The whole festival is observed only for three days. Sangpangtu, is one of the main celebration where a big fire is lit and men and women adorned with best attire sit around it. Women serve the wine and meat to the attendees. Rice-beer is prepared and all the reared pigs and cows are slaughtered during the festival. Women weave the traditional garments and adorn themselves with traditional jewellery. Women join men in dancing, eating, drinking and composing warrior songs.

Day by Day

Welcome at the airport and then transfer to Mokokchung. Night in hotel.
Today is the festival Moatsu of the Ao tribe residing in Mokokchung. Visit to the ground which is lively for the festival. Spend these two days discovering the cultural hub of Nagaland. Observe the lifestyle of the Ao Tribe, visit their homes, and learn more about their customs. Visit the district art and culture museum and the town centre to look for handwoven shawls. Another great excursion can be to the nearby village of Mopungchuket. Overnight at Mokokchung.
After breakfast, visit of Mopungchuket and Longkhum villages. Later drive to Tuophema Village. En route visit Wokha, the Lotha and Angami tribe belt. The time in the afternoon can be used for the exploration of the hamlet, especially the stone from where the villagers are known to take their designs for shawls. For a well spent evening, you can observe the cotton spinning by the local women along with traditional music and songs of the state. Overnight in the traditionally built cottages.
Morning after breakfast witness the traditional cultural show performed by local tribal people. Later depart for the Khonoma Green Village where you will stay in a beautiful homestay, situated in the midst of pine trees. Evening free to enjoy a nature walk. Night in homestay.
After breakfast, drive to Jorhat where you can enjoy a guided visit to a nearby factory, followed by a tea tasting tour of the different grades of tea produced in the factory or the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary or visit some nearby villages to observe the simple and sustainable lifestyle of the Indian countryside. Later in the evening, a cultural dance performance can be organized if there’s a group of more than 4 persons. Night in hotel.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport. End of our services.
